Turn the magnification up and you've got 8x available for smaller targets, better target identification, and more precise holds at distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's the basic appeal of an LPVO.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt won't be as simple or light as a red dot, and it won't give you the magnification of a dedicated precision scope. What it gives you instead is the ability to move between those two worlds without changing optics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a practical general-purpose rifle, that can make a lot of sense.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat Does 1-8x Actually Give You?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the bottom end, the EP-8 gives you a \u003cstrong\u003e121.15-foot field of view at 100 yards\u003c\/strong\u003e. With the illumination turned up and the magnification at 1x, the optic is set up for both-eyes-open shooting and quick target acquisition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen you've got 2x, 4x, 6x, and eventually 8x available when distance or target size makes magnification useful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's an important way to think about an LPVO.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou don't buy an 8x scope because you intend to leave it at 8x.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou buy it because you can keep the rifle at low power when speed and field of view matter, then add magnification when seeing more detail actually helps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEight power won't turn a carbine into a precision rifle. It can, however, make it considerably easier to identify a target, find a more precise aiming point, and use your reticle intelligently as the distance increases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's useful capability to have available.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWhy First Focal Plane?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eEP-8 uses a first focal plane reticle\u003c\/strong\u003e, so the reticle scales as you change magnification and its subtensions remain valid throughout the magnification range.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn an LPVO, there's a tradeoff to that.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt lower magnification, the reticle becomes smaller. That's why illumination and good reticle design matter. At higher magnification, the reticle expands and gives you more useful information for precise holds.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thing we really like about Arken's KL Reticles is the large outer ring visible at 1x for rapid target acquisition... just put the target in the big circle and pull the trigger!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eKLBOX or KLGRID?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArken currently offers the EP-8 with two reticles, and we'd choose between them based on what you actually expect the rifle to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eKLBOX\u003c\/strong\u003e is the simpler option. It's a BDC-style reticle designed around quick acquisition and straightforward hold references. If you're looking for a general-purpose LPVO and don't want a lot of information competing for your attention, there's a good argument for keeping things simple.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe \u003cstrong\u003eKLGRID\u003c\/strong\u003e is a MIL-based Christmas-tree-style reticle with considerably more information available for elevation and wind holds. If you're going to spend time shooting at varying distances, working with corrections, or simply prefer a MIL-based system that lets you develop your own data, the additional references can be useful.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeither is automatically better.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA detailed reticle is useful when you understand it and need the information.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOtherwise, it's just more stuff in your field of view.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePick the reticle you're willing to learn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eA 34mm LPVO at 21 Ounces\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe EP-8 uses a \u003cstrong\u003e34mm main tube and 28mm objective\u003c\/strong\u003e while keeping the scope itself to about \u003cstrong\u003e21 ounces\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's worth paying attention to because weight matters differently on this kind of rifle than it does on a dedicated precision rig.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAdd the optic, mount, sling, light, suppressor, loaded magazine, and everything else we tend to bolt onto a general-purpose rifle and the ounces start becoming pounds pretty quickly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwenty-one ounces isn't ultralight, and an LPVO is never going to compete with a small red dot for simplicity or weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut you're getting something for those ounces: variable magnification, an FFP reticle, illumination, and the ability to make more deliberate shots as distance increases.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether that's worth the weight depends on what you're asking the rifle to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWhere Does the EP-8 Make Sense?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe'd look at the \u003cstrong\u003eArken EP-8\u003c\/strong\u003e for a general-purpose AR, practical carbine, competition rifle, or other setup where the distances and target sizes can change enough that both speed and magnification have value.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf the rifle's job is almost entirely close range, we'd seriously consider whether a red dot is simpler.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf the rifle's job is mostly precision shooting at several hundred yards, we'd probably want more magnification.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut if you need to work somewhere between those two ends, that's exactly where a 1-8x LPVO starts earning its keep.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd there's something to be said for knowing the rifle in your hands can deal with a close target, a smaller target farther out, or something in between without changing
